Understanding Energy Cords

Have you ever found yourself thinking about someone you haven't spoken to in years, only to have them suddenly text or call? Or maybe someone popped into your mind out of nowhere, and later you discovered they were going through a difficult time. Experiences like these are one reason many spiritual traditions talk about energy cords.

An energy cord is simply an energetic connection between you and another person. Every meaningful relationship creates one — our spouses, children, parents, close friends, and even people who have briefly crossed our path. These cords allow energy, emotions, and awareness to flow between us. Most of the time, that's a beautiful thing. Healthy relationships tend to have a balanced exchange of energy that leaves both people feeling supported and connected.

Problems can arise, however, when a relationship becomes unhealthy or emotionally draining. Sometimes a cord can begin carrying more fear, resentment, guilt, anger, or attachment than love.

You might benefit from a cord-cutting practice if you notice things like:

  • You can't stop thinking about a particular person, even though you'd rather move on.

  • You feel emotionally or physically drained after spending time with someone.

  • The same painful memories keep replaying in your mind.

  • You feel anxious, heavy, or unsettled whenever someone's name comes up.

  • You find yourself holding onto an old version of yourself that no longer reflects who you're becoming.

These experiences don't automatically mean something is "wrong," but they can be a gentle invitation to clear your energy and create more space for peace, clarity, and healing.

Interestingly, cords aren't limited to other people. We can also stay energetically connected to old versions of ourselves, painful memories, limiting beliefs, or habits we've been trying to leave behind. If something from your past still has an emotional grip on you, there may be an energetic connection that's ready to be released.

One of the simplest ways to begin clearing these attachments is through a cord-cutting visualization.

Find a quiet place where you won't be interrupted and imagine the person, or even the memory or old version of yourself, standing in front of you.

Notice the energetic connection between you. Don't worry if you don't "see" anything perfectly. Simply trust whatever comes to mind. Before releasing the cord, ask yourself, What was I meant to learn from this relationship or experience? Then imagine using whatever tool feels right ~ a pair of scissors, garden shears, or even a sword ~ to gently cut the cord. As I'm doing this, I like to say: "I send their energy back to them with light, love and compassion."

Once it's released, visualize any leftover energy dissolving away. Then surround yourself with beautiful golden light, allowing your own energy to return fully to you. If visualization doesn't come easily, you can create a simple symbolic ritual by writing your name on one piece of paper and the other person's name (or the memory or belief) on another. Tie the papers together with string, reflect on the lesson, and then cut the string as your intention to release the energetic attachment.

Afterward, take a few minutes to journal anything that surfaced. Sometimes emotions, memories, or insights rise to the surface as part of the healing process.

And remember, some cords have been in place for years. It's perfectly normal to repeat this practice more than once. Each time you choose peace over re-engaging with old pain, you create a little more space for your own energy, clarity, and freedom to return.
